Passing Through:
Contemporary Flânerie

Launch Passing Through

“The great reminiscences, the historical frissons these are all so much junk to the flâneur, who is happy to trade all his knowledge of artists’ quarters, birthplaces, and princely palaces for the scent of a single weathered threshold or the touch of a single tile”
-Walter Benjamin, Return of the Flâneur

Inspired in part by the spirit of Walter Benjamin’s Return of the Flâneur, Passing through is a work in progress that will incorporate diverse media in varying tempos and states of clarity to simulate real-time, dream-time and hyper-time.  Thus it will parallel virtually the physical cityscape of the flâneur, while it simultaneously reflects on the media being used and on the global climate of our contemporary world.  Composed of imagery and sounds collected over a period of two decades from diverse geographic locations (Eastern Europe, Wales, Central America, the Middle East, and the USA) Passing through will employ a number of radically different aesthetic modes, from romantic documentary to gritty realism, from the fantastical to cyberpunk.  Windows, doorways, and tunnels will form visual threads throughout, functioning as non-linear entrances and exits, hyper-linking between the different worlds that the media generate. The ensuing shifts in perspective are designed to cause viewers to question their sense of perception and traditional notions of a fixed reality.  Passing through will also incorporate a unique combination of historical and contemporary texts which, when brought together with its images and sounds, invoke a sense of being in someone else’s mind.
